Nightguards
Nightguards are essentially custom mouthguards that you wear to bed due to bruxism, or unconsciously grinding or clenching the teeth. There are various signs that you could be teeth grinding, including:
- Overly sensitive teeth
- Facial pain or tension
- Headaches
- Damage to the inside of the cheek
- Chipped or cracked teeth
- Jaw discomfort
- …and more
If you experience any of these or similar symptoms. Reach out to Austin Family Dentistry and we can schedule an appointment to assess the situation and see if a nightguard is required.
Bruxism can be caused by stress, crooked teeth, abnormal bites, or several other factors.
During regular dental visits and cleanings, your dentist will examine the teeth and see if any signs of bruxism exist. If they do, it may be time for a nightguard.
Fortunately, nightguards are able to stop teeth grinding. Each nightguard is customly designed for each patient from a soft material that fits comfortably in your mouth and prevents contact between upper and lower teeth. Impressions are taken of the top and bottom teeth. An intraoral scan is taken to create digital impressions of your top and bottom teeth and capture your bite. A 3-D file is sent to the lab to create a custom fit night guard.
