Your First Visit at Austin Family Dentistry

Welcome to Your First Visit

We begin your first appointment with a comprehensive evaluation of your oral health, allowing us to recommend care that’s appropriate for your specific needs. When a routine cleaning is appropriate and time allows, we are often able to complete it during the same visit. If periodontal therapy or a different type of care is needed, we will explain our findings and help schedule the appropriate treatment. At Austin Family Dentistry, we believe every patient deserves personalized attention. We’ll discuss your concerns, explain our findings, and create a care plan designed to support your long-term oral health.

Whether you’re new to the area or looking for a new dental home, we’ll make every effort to help you feel comfortable, informed, and confident throughout your appointment.

What Happens During Your First Appointment

Your first appointment helps us understand your oral health so we can recommend care that’s personalized to your needs.

Comprehensive Doctor Examination

Your dentist will carefully examine your teeth, gums, jaw, and the surrounding tissues to get a complete picture of your oral health. This evaluation helps identify existing concerns and detect potential problems before they become more serious.

Digital X-Rays (As Needed)

When appropriate, digital X-rays provide detailed images that help us evaluate areas not visible during a clinical exam. They assist in identifying cavities, bone loss, infections, and other underlying conditions.

Gum & Periodontal Evaluation

Healthy gums provide the foundation for a strong, lasting smile. We’ll evaluate your gums for signs of periodontal disease and recommend preventive or restorative care if necessary.

Bite & Wear Evaluation

Your bite affects both comfort and long-term oral health. We’ll evaluate how your teeth fit together and look for signs of grinding, uneven wear, or bite-related concerns that may require attention.

iTero® Digital Scan (When Appropriate)

For certain patients, an iTero digital scan helps us create a highly accurate 3D model of your teeth without traditional impressions. This technology supports diagnosis and, when needed, future treatment planning.

Oral Cancer Screening

Your comprehensive exam includes a careful evaluation of your lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, and other soft tissues to check for any unusual changes. Identifying concerns early can support timely evaluation and care.

Cosmetic & Smile Discussion

If there are changes you’d like to make to your smile, we’ll take time to discuss your goals and explain treatment options that may be appropriate for your needs.

Personalized Treatment Plan

Before you leave, your dentist will review the findings, answer your questions, explain any recommended treatment, and create a customized plan for your ongoing dental care.

Insurance Estimate Review

If treatment is recommended, our team will review your available dental insurance benefits whenever possible and provide an estimate of your insurance benefits to help you plan with confidence.

Patient Forms & Registration

To help your appointment go smoothly, we encourage new patients to complete any available forms before arriving. Providing your medical history, dental history, insurance information, and a list of current medications helps us prepare for your appointment.

If anything on your forms is unclear, don’t hesitate to ask—our front desk team is always available to help.

Insurance, Financing & Payment Options

We believe patients should clearly understand their financial options before treatment begins.

Our team will work with you to help make the financial side of your care as straightforward as possible. We’ll review your insurance benefits whenever available, explain your payment options, and discuss financing if needed. If anything is unclear, we’re always here to answer your questions.

Why Your First Visit Is More Comprehensive

Your first visit is designed to give our doctors a complete understanding of your oral health before recommending care. This allows us to identify concerns early, explain what we see, and create a personalized plan focused on long-term health.

Every patient’s oral health is unique, so a comprehensive evaluation provides the information needed to recommend care that’s tailored to your specific needs. Our goal is to provide clear explanations, answer your questions, and help you make informed decisions about your ongoing dental care.
